Sharing saithe stocks with Russia?
Posted on Tuesday, October 15, 2002

Russian fishermen working in the Norwegian EEZ have many times faced the problem of exceeding regular by-catch for this species. It was the reason for detaining several Russian vessels this year by Norwegian coastguard. Norwegian authorities naturally claim their rights for fishing saithe within their economic zone, demanding other countries to observe the restrictions.

The last survey for evaluation of saithe stocks was held by Russian scientists as long back as in 1970-s. Now Russians attempt to convince Norway that saithe should be regarded as a common resource.

PINRO’s preliminary forecasts show that the stock of saithe is presently on the normal level. Russians plan to start evaluation surveys until the year-end.
