Audacious plans of Murmansk fish processor
Posted on Monday, September 23, 2002

Having acquainted with Mr Zub’s proposal, Russia’s State Fisheries Committee officials have found it interesting enough to be presented at the meeting.

The idea lies in developing of an efficient scheme of inexpensive fish supplies to Murmansk processors. Mr Zub suggests that 40 000-tonnes international industrial quota for catching pelagic species should be given to the Murmansk Fish Processing Plant. According to his proposal, 25 000 tonnes will be caught within the Russian EEZ, with the rest of the catch falling on Norwegian waters. It is planned to work on a time-charter basis: one Russian and several Norwegian vessels will be engaged. Such a system will allow reducing production costs considerably.

However, fulfilling these daring plans will not be a simple task. If everything goes as planned and MFPP obtains the quota, Kaliningrad and St. Petersburg fisheries will naturally get smaller shares. Certainly, these regions cannot but protest against infringing on their interests. But Mr Zub is determined to stand his ground, and is getting ready with all papers necessary to solve the problem.
