The All-Russian conference “Economic Issues of the Fishery Development in Russia” was held in Moscow on October 28-29th. The conference gathered representatives of all branches of the Russian fish industry to discuss the sector’s current situation and future perspectives.

Summarizing the event, participants spoke of the lasting crisis of the Russian fishery sector seriously aggravated over the last years despite the country’s general economic growth. The origins of the crisis are diverse and include such problems as the stocks deterioration observed in the Russian exclusive economic zone and the dwindling of certain profitable species; infringement upon Russia’s interests in the world fishing community; the obsolescence of the fishing fleet; collapse of the on-shore processing infrastructure; introduction of the harmful system of quota auctions.

The industry calls for drastic measures to be taken in order to promote adequate organizational schemes and legislation as well as the scientific and technical progress, participants of the conference concluded.
