Shipowner evading reimbursements to the crew
Posted on Thursday, October 31, 2002

The five Murmansk crewmembers that worked onboard the vessel "Isfjell", sunken off the west coast of Norway, now demand the indemnity stipulated by their contracts with the shipowner.

The accident happened on October 12, after the vessel chartered by the company Samskip to deliver frozen fish to Baltic and other European countries, had undergone repairs in one of the Norwegian ports.

Immediately after the accident, the shipowner made an attempt to pay the wages to the Russian fishermen for the actual working period and terminate their employment agreements. The crewmen, however, did not agree and demanded the insurance compensation, which had to be provided by the terms of their contracts. The total reimbursement sum is estimated at $ 40 000.
