New order of quotas distribution causes Murmansk fishermen’s worries
Posted on Monday, October 14, 2002

Quotas for fishing both in and beyond the Russian EEZ will be allocated under a newly adopted scheme; such news came from the State Fisheries Committee of the Russian Federation.

“From now on, every shipowner, regardless of whether he wishes to obtain an industrial quota or to bid for quotas at the auction, will have to make a travel to Moscow to arrange being listed for quotas distribution”, explained Gennady Stepakhno, head of the Association of Fishing Enterprises of the North.

Mr Stepakhno assumes that regional interests are being harmed again by the federal authorities. “It looks like the preference will be given to those with a heavy purse,” he commented. If things go like that, most fishing companies of the Murmansk region will probably stop existing at all.
