Northern Sea Corridor
Posted on Wednesday, September 25, 2002

Rune Rafaelson, head of the Barents Euro-Arctic Region Secretariat is going to visit Murmansk tomorrow, September 26th, to meet with the Murmansk region’s governor Yuri Yevdokimov. Participation of the region in the Northern Sea Corridor project will be discussed.

The project aims at establishing an effective sea transport system across the Barents region. Creating the new infrastructure will require common efforts of all participating regions. It will involve the modernization of seaports and many other improvements.

The start of the project implementation is set to January 9, 2003, when the participants will hold their first meeting in Kirkenes. It will be followed next day by negotiations between prime ministers of the member states.

Besides, the Norwegian government plans to raise the questions dealing with the Northern Sea Corridor project at the Russian- Norwegian summit in November 2002.
