Cod and saithe by-catches should be curbed
Posted on Monday, September 23, 2002

Norwegian coast guard authorities require cooperation from the Russian side to clamp down on illegally high cod and saithe by-catches surged recently by Russian herring-fishing vessels.

Lars Kj?ren, representing the Norwegian coast guard service, announced that Norway urges Russian shipowners take control of their herring-catching vessels landing unlawfully large cod and saithe by-catches.

Mr Kj?ren has estimated that 50 Russian trawlers currently fishing herring in Norwegian waters have already hauled hundreds of tonnes of cod and saithe as by-catches. He pointed that, despite regular recommendations voiced by Norwegian coast guards in regard with the fishing areas to be avoided as being too abundant in species other than herring, Russian vessels keep on giving trouble to the Norwegian authorities.
