Herring fishing season is almost over for some companies
Posted on Wednesday, September 18, 2002

Six vessels of the Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet proceed with herring fishing in the Norwegian economic zone.

Within a period of 9 days, 4 490 tonnes fish was landed: the herring catch amounts to 3 500 tonnes, the blue whiting and cod by-catches make respectively 500 and 80 tonnes. The fishery conditions are still unstable there, and mostly small-sized herring is being caught. Some of the crews are now engaged in smaller maintenance works onboard.

Providing the weather conditions are favourable, the rest of the herring quota could be taken up during 2 or 3 days, ATF representatives assess. After that, the fishermen will start catching blue whiting.

Some vessels are gradually shifting to bottom species fishing, which looks more promising at the moment.

So, till the end of September the vessels will have enough work, but later forecasts are gloomy.
