Fishing of cod and haddock in Exclusive Russian Economical Zone
Posted on Saturday, September 7, 2002

The Fisheries Committee of Murmansk regional administration has received the reply to its proposal sent earlier on behalf of the local fish industrialists with regard to making amendments to Russian government’s decree No. 1702.

The document in question relates to the utilisation of cod and haddock quotas it the Exclusive Russian Economic zone. The answer of the government is negative.

According to the governmental decision, cod and haddock fishing in the Barents sea shall be done as stipulated by the decree by means of small-sized coastal fishing vessels only.

From the Russian State Fisheries Committee, the request of Murmansk fishermen had been sent to the Ministry of Economic Development. Upon giving much consideration to the matter, the Ministry officials decided to leave the present situation unchanged. Consequently, small-sized vessels proceed with cod and haddock fishing in the off-shore area, while deep-sea fishing vessels idle in the Murmansk harbour.
