Chairman of Federation Council declare against fish auctions
Posted on Monday, August 26, 2002

Chairman of Federation Council Sergey Mironov declared against fish auctions that arranges now for second year in order to distribute quotas for aqua biological recourses. This problem was discussed among others on his meeting with president Vladimir Putin.

The situation with fish resources in the Far East Russia is totally unacceptable. Mironov that have recently visited Siberia and Far East regions noticed that he was a supporter of fishing auctions before this visit, but has now completely changed his mind. At his opinion the present system for distributing of quotas on auctions leads to plundering of bioresources. According to Mironov the quotas are often bought by the foreign companies while Russian fish-processing plants idle without raw material.

Speaker of Upper Chamber believes that there is a need for a Fishery Law that would also regulate distribution of quotas. The latter version of such a law accepted by the parliament but rejected by the president should at Mironov’s opinion be forgotten and the work on a completely new document should start.
