Poacher boat has appeared in Barents Sea
Posted on Friday, August 2, 2002

Officers of Federal Frontier Service of Russian Federation attempt to inspect a vessel fishing in Barents Sea with a name “Leemeti”.

Deputy chief of sea security of Federal Frontier Service, Leonid Shutov, has informed that this vessel is owned by Karelian fishing company called “Gridino”. The vessel has taken out all of its quotas some time ago, but remained in the Russian Economical Zone.

Furthermore they got some problems with their system of vessel observation. The ship-owner has explained to coastguards that the system was damaged by stormy weather. However coastguards have a reason to believe that the vessel was fishing illegally.

As a response on an attempt to inspect the ship, the vessel went in the direction of Norwegian waters. Strong storm in that particular region makes it impossible for the coastguards to approach “Leemeti”.

Most likely Karelian ship will manage to escape to Norwegian zone. In this case it will be nearly impossible to proof the breach of fishery rules.
