Fishery forecast for august
Posted on Tuesday, July 23, 2002

On July 18th 2002, Polar Institute arranged a meeting with a main goal to analyse a forecast for august 2002 regarding feedstock situation, conditions of fish and invertebrates fishery in European North and North Atlantic.

According to the opinion of scientists of PINRO air temperature above the area of Barents Sea and Norwegian Sea will be close to the average of last several years, the number of stormy days in august will not increase 3-4, water temperature in most regions of Barents Sea will be higher then normal, in Norwegian Sea – considerably higher then the average of last several years. The icing at sea will be below a normal level in august.

A good fishery situation in Barents Sea will remain in august. However catching volumes will decrease to the end of the month due to migration of cod to the periphery of finishing area that means spreading over a bigger territory. Better fishery conditions are expected in north-west part of the sea, particularly along Svalbard stream and north branch of Northcape stream. The main part of the catch is expected to be medium-sized and large cod with a negligible by-catch of haddock (10 – 15 % in average). By-catch of non-conventional cod and haddock can cause difficulties for fishery in shallow areas with depth less then 200 m. In Russian economical zone and Gray zone, cod will be widely spread from Murmansk to Gusinaya bank. The average length of cod in the catches will be less then in Bear-Svalbard area. At the same time the volume of haddock will be higher, especially near the coastline.

In august, it is reasonably to pay a special attention to catching of haddock. It is expected a better fishery situation compared with the same period of 2001 due to increased volume of fish in the sea and size-age structure of haddock population. But fishery will meet some difficulties due to by-catch of small sized fish-arts, and in several sea areas – Kamchatka crabs.

To take out all allocated quotas of American plaice, The Polar Institute recommends to dedicate a group of not more then 10 vessels in august to work on this specie.

Most favorable conditions considering shrimp fishery are expected in the area near by Svalbard island, less favorable – in Russian economical zone (due to an overlap of cod and shrimp presence in this area) and also in the Gray area and open part of Barents sea. In august, the large-capacity fleet should focus on catching mackerel, blue-whiting and herring.

It is expected that in august 2002 migration of mackerel in south direction will be more intensive then last year due to irregular high water temperature in Norwegian stream. Catching mackerel will be possible in both open part of Norwegian sea and fishing zone of Faeroe Islands, where Russia still have unused quotas.

In august, most of the herring will be concentrated in Bear-Svalbard area. Formation of fishery concentrations on return migration in south direction is expected in the same period as in year 2001. Best fishery conditions are expected south for latitude 75 North in first part of the month, and south for latitude 74 North in the second part. In Norwegian economical zone, developing of fishery concentrations will start from the middle of august.

In the open part of Norwegian sea, concentrations of fatten blue-whiting will be formed on a vast area. The blue-whiting will mainly be caught as a by-catch to mackerel, but it is also possible that in some period of time fishery activities can be dedicated to blue-whiting alone. The concentration of fish in Norwegian economic zone will decrease in august due to continuing migration to north regions of the sea. It is recommended with no fishery activities in the region of Faeroe Islands for the purpose of spearing quotas for the rest of the year.
