Russia’s President to visit Norway this week
Posted on Sunday, November 10, 2002

On Tuesday, November 12, the Russian President Vladimir Putin will arrive in Norway with an official visit.

Among other issues, the Oslo talks will highlight the two states’ position in the field of fisheries, since this area has always required close cooperation between the neighbour countries.

Governor of the Murmansk region Yuri Yevdokimov is among members of the Russian delegation to accompany Putin at the summit.

It is expected that the problem of conducting marine research will be raised during the visit. So far, Russian-Norwegian negotiations regarding the access of research vessels into each other’s national waters have come to a deadlock. Norway is not willing to allow any more Russian research vessels into the Norwegian exclusive economic zone, in response to Russia’s similar actions.

The hopes are that an agreement will still be reached, as Norway and Russia share a number of common fish stocks, and collaboration between scientists is essential.
